CPET is a valuable tool in the diagnosis, management and prognostication in a variety of pulmonary and non-pulmonary diseases. There is renewed interest in learning this technique. The role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in the pre -operative setting has been established in lung resection, cardiac transplantation and vascular surgeries. CPET provides a safe, reliable, repeatable, non-invasive, objective, individual assessment of combined pulmonary, cardiac, musculoskeletal and circulatory function. It quantifies the functional ability to respond to the increased metabolic demands of major surgery generating a patient-specific measure of risk. Hence, CPET invokes interest from anaesthetists, cardiologists and a variety of surgical specialities. Our department has been performing cardiopulmonary exercise testing for the last 12 years and has for the first time, derived  normal values for our population. In this workshop, we aim to cover a wide range of topics from basic understanding of CPET to interpreting the results in appropriate settings for evaluation of unexplained dyspnoea and deciding on pre-operative clearance in specific situations.

The last CPET workshop was conducted on March 2018.
